Skillfully handwoven by rural women in Swaziland, this set of two Smoke, Olive Green and Blush placemats brings authentic African richness to any table setting.
About the process:
Gone Rural in is a social enterprise with a passion for creating world-class handcraft as a powerful vehicle for social change in Swaziland. They employ over 750 local Swazi women, who all work from home on their own schedules, to produce their gorgeous line of tableware and home organization products. To begin, local Lutinzi grass is harvested by the women in the mountains. Gone Rural dyes the grass, returning it to the women with orders to fulfill. The grass is woven into fine braids, and then into placemats, baskets, and other gorgeous home goods. Every step of the way, the women who produce for Gone Rural are empowered with sustainable income for their families. Gone Rural also re-invests a percentage of profits to their non-profit branch, BoMake, which provides clean water, mobile health clinics, and greater access to education and proper sanitation in the communities in which their employees reside.
