Your purchase of GIE-DANI Baskets from Zeal Living has a tangible impact on the lives of artisans and their communities in Niger.
Founded in 1995, GIE-DANI is a group of 13 artisan cooperatives in urban areas throughout Niger. The group, supported by the Luxembourg government, began as a way to support and promote the work of Nigerien artisans.
Cooperatives have their own workshops, where members can use tools and equipment in exchange for a nominal fee. In this way, they can improve their skills and apprentices can learn new techniques under mentorship.
Weaving is a longstanding tradition in Niger, and for our products, doum palm leaves are used. Palm leaves are the most readily available local material, and have been used in traditional weaving for hundreds of years. The center medallion in our baskets is made by nomadic Touareg artisans, and the baskets are woven around them.
